For Local Distribution Centres (LDC's), weighing has typically relied on having wagons pull into the sidings and be placed on a 'rail weighbridge' to be able to obtain an accurate weight. This means the wagon having to physically stop which eats into production times.

Alongside timing, another of the major downsides to this was that imbalances were almost impossible to spot-check. Although trains would be accurate in the total weight, the imbalances due to overloading in a certain areas, i.e. wheel overloading, side overloading etc, could cause irreparable damage to rail and has even been found to be the main cause of derailment.
